Discover the Cairngorms on Foot
Join us for a week of guided walks for all abilities in and around Ballater and the stunning Cairngorms National Park.
Organised and led by local volunteers, the Ballater Walking Festival welcomes walkers from across the UK and around the world. Many visitors return year after year to enjoy the warm atmosphere, exceptional scenery and varied programme.
Proudly ranked among the UK’s Top 10 Walking Festivals by The Guardian in 2024, the festival will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2027.
A Programme for Everyone
Our programme offers something for every level of walker, from gentle countryside strolls to challenging Cairngorm Munros, with plenty in between.
Alongside our varied walking programme, we offer:
Walks of special historical, cultural and wildlife interest
An accessible wheelchair-friendly walk
Evening talk and entertainment programme
Opportunities to meet fellow walkers and local experts
Whether you’re an experienced hillwalker or simply enjoy exploring beautiful landscapes at a more relaxed pace, you’ll find a walk to suit you.
Led by People Who Know the Area Best
Our walks are guided by knowledgeable local volunteers who are passionate about walking and eager to share their love of this remarkable part of Scotland.
The festival depends on the dedication of volunteers who organise, drive, guide and support the event throughout the week. For some of our more demanding mountain routes, professional mountain guides are employed to ensure the highest standards of safety and expertise.
Supporting the Local Community
As a not-for-profit organisation, all proceeds from the Ballater Walking Festival are reinvested in the local community through donations to village clubs, charities and community organisations.
By taking part, you’re helping support Ballater and the surrounding area.
Ballater & The Cairngorms National Park
Nestled in the heart of Royal Deeside, Ballater is a picturesque Victorian village offering a wide range of accommodation, cafés, restaurants and independent shops.
Surrounded by the spectacular landscapes of the Cairngorms National Park, visitors can explore ancient Caledonian pine forests, sparkling rivers and lochs, heather-covered moorland and some of the highest mountains in the UK.
Renowned for its wildlife, natural beauty and outdoor opportunities, the Cairngorms provide an unforgettable setting for a walking festival.
